A Bridge Too Far or a Peace Too Far ‏

By Walid Joumblatt

My friend Uri,

While reading your article on “the Crusaders and Zionists” one cannot ignore similarities between the two historical movements although separated by a period of almost six centuries. And the actual trend of events in the Arab world and Israel is in favor of this parallelism.

From one side, the Arab order established almost a hundred year ago is collapsing today, and I do not think that anybody can predict the outcome of this falldown.

A new Arab order or disorder is in the process of making, whereby the new borders if ever traced will be shrinking or widening depending on the new actors on the ground.

It could be local warlords, or developing non state entities like Al Nusra in Syria, Hamas in Gaza, ISIS in Iraq and Syria, the Houthis in Yemen and so on. The list is quite long with possible newcomers.

As for the various sects or confessions like Druzes and Christians it is better to accommodate with the reality. Better for the druses to seal a de facto of minimum understanding with the majority of the Syrians, I mean the Sunnis regardless of their political affiliation.

As for the Christians, a huge effort should be done to prevent them if possible not to leave the Middle East where it is still possible. In Lebanon for example somebody should tell them to get out of their Byzantine disputes.

I do not envy the fate of the Eizidis abandoned by the whole world .

On the other hand, the power of ideas as you said, the power of annihilation as I see it, will destroy centuries of civilizations, using the sword of intolerance coupled with modern warfare accessible to everybody nowadays.

This where ISIS comes.

It claims to fight Arab despots entrenched in their tyranny and corruption.

It claims to fight infidels like Jews and heretic Moslems those who are not abiding by the rules of “Righteousness”.

It will claim ultimately the entire liberation of Palestine occupied by the new Crusaders, and free Al -Aqsa from the infidels.

Of course this is a fight without mercy, because blood should be purified by blood.

The altar of total destruction will ignite total purification.

From the other side, the Israeli side rises the dream of rebuilding the Temple Mount, a kind of new crusade, an Armageddon dream of two thousand year, much older in biblical time, but where on each side are fighting the descendants of Abraham. As you know the secular Zionism died long time ago, and even at that time when they came to Palestine, they imagined a land without people, for a people without land.

This where I just think that Runciman was right.

On this note, let me conclude that it is a peace too far like a bridge too far.
